Modern Manners and Mental Fortitude (MMMF) | Evidence and Policy Brief
Educator Question 1
"Is this curriculum evidence-based?"
Educator Question 2
"Does it operate within the rules about social emotional learning in schools?"
YES.
Both answers are yes. MMMF is grounded in peer-reviewed research spanning nearly a century of educational scholarship, CASEL-aligned competencies, and active Utah state policy. Below is the data behind that claim.

The SEL Research Base
Durlak et al. (2011) | Child Development
Across 213 school-based SEL programs and 270,034 students, participants showed significantly improved social and emotional skills, attitudes, behavior, and academic performance. Academic gains rivaled programs focused exclusively on academics.
2022 Updated Meta-Analysis | CASEL / Yale
A follow-up review screened more than 31,000 studies. The resulting dataset of 450 qualifying studies confirmed and extended the 2011 findings into the current decade, reinforcing the durability of SEL outcomes.
Independent Replication | US, UK, Netherlands
Three separate research groups, working independently across three countries, reached the same conclusion: universal school-based SEL programs produce positive benefits on behavioral, attitudinal, emotional, and academic outcomes, both immediately after the program and across follow-up periods.
Behavioral Outcomes
SEL participants demonstrated measurable reductions in conduct problems and emotional distress compared to control groups. These outcomes are consistent across student populations with and without behavioral or emotional risk factors.
Utah Policy Alignment
CASEL: Utah is an active SEL guidance state
The Utah State Board of Education provides SEL resources including the Personalized Competency-based Learning Framework and SEL Microcredentials for Teachers.
Utah Code 53E-4-202: Core Standards
The USBE must establish core standards identifying the competencies each student is expected to acquire across grade levels, including civic and character education, which MMMF directly addresses.
Utah Admin Code R277-400-8: LEA Directive
Utah law directs Local Education Agencies to develop or incorporate programs related to digital citizenship and social and emotional learning. Two of MMMF's five modules address these areas directly.
Utah Code 53G-7-1307 (2025): State Pilot
Utah law created a formal three-year pilot for teaching self-government skills, classroom communication, and personal problem-solving in schools. This mirrors MMMF's PLRR and POCC frameworks by design.
Curriculum Design Foundations • How MMMF Is Built
Tyler, 1949
Objectives-Based Design
All MMMF goals are measurable and aligned backward from the capstone task. Meets ESSA requirements for clear, verifiable student outcomes.
Bruner, 1960
Spiral Curriculum
All four core pillars revisit at increasing complexity across every module. Skills are reinforced, not introduced once and abandoned.
Stern et al., 2021
Transfer-Focused Design
Students apply skills to novel, high-stakes scenarios they have never practiced. Coverage is never the goal. Independent transfer is.
Dewey, 1938
Experience and Reflection
Role-play and simulations ground every lesson in experience. Weekly reflection journals connect that experience to concept and future action.
CASEL, 2020
Five Core Competencies
Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making are all addressed across MMMF's five modules.
Wiles and Bondi, 2015
Curriculum Planning Model
CMP links context, goals, implementation, and evaluation into a coherent whole with continuous improvement built into the design.

What MMMF claims now
MMMF is built on peer-reviewed research frameworks, CASEL-aligned competencies, and Utah state policy. The SEL field has demonstrated positive outcomes across hundreds of thousands of students. These are the foundations MMMF applies.
What formal tiering will add
ESSA evidence tier certification and CASEL Program Guide listing are in progress. A formal pilot will produce program-specific outcome data. That work is underway. Pilot inquiries are welcome at readyforreal.life.
